Our Trustee Board has gone through a transformation over the past two years and has a new generation of trustees who bring specific areas of expertise to the role of governance.

We have a new Strategy and a strong ambition. We are looking for a fundraising expert who can support the work of the Board and CEO to relieve the distress and suffering of people, with a particular focus on women and children who have suffered or are exposed to domestic abuse.

In addition to usual trustee functions we are looking for an individual who can support our ambition through...

  • Opening doors and bringing in connections - either personally, or via a volunteer board of connectors and donors.
  • Bringing a substantial background as a senior charity Fundraiser with a sound understanding and experience of charity fundraising at strategic and operational levels.
  • Bringing overall leadership and drive as the Co-Chair of the Fundraising and Communications Committee, ensuring the development of the overall governance of the charity’s fundraising and communications functions
  • Ensuring that there is the right breadth and depth of fundraising and communications skills on the Fundraising and Communications Committee, with access to the right networks, in order that the charity is in the best possible position to develop and deliver high quality strategies in fundraising, marketing and communications.
  • Ensuring highest standards of probity and integrity in policies and practice related to fundraising
  • Assessing risks and measuring the impact of fundraising interventions in the light of best practice.
  • Experience of the refuge sector is not essential, but any successful candidate will be expected to be able to demonstrate an understanding of, and empathy with our values, aims and objectives.

What skills do I need?

We seek a candidate who has the time and energy to commit to Safe in Sussex and the confidence and skills to act in a governance role and bring their fundraising expertise.

We are looking for a candidate with experience in high value fundraising, who understands the region (and its potential for fundraising growth), and is comfortable taking a leadership role in a major capital campaign. This could include:

  • Experience in corporate partnerships, trusts or major donors.
  • Relevant networks or strong networking skills who can open doors and bring in connections - either personally, or via a volunteer board of connectors and donors.
  • Professional charity fundraising knowledge, notably in individual giving (including digital), corporate and major donor fundraising and community fundraising
  • Knowledge of the UK charity fundraising sector
  • Strategic planning skills
  • Familiarity with the operation of trusts and corporate social responsibility.
  • Comfort in approaching high net worth individuals through targeted campaigns.
  • Professional experience working in Communications would be an advantage but is not necessary.

We aim to operate a supportive environment where fellow Trustees and members of staff are encouraged to develop their skills to their fullest extent, and this role will play an important part in achieving that aim. An understanding of the charity and voluntary sector will be an advantage and knowledge of the governance of charities is essential. We are also looking for someone who has understanding of, and empathy with the aims and objectives of Safe in Sussex.

Safe in Sussex is a feminist, non-discriminatory and non-judgmental organisation that welcomes and values the diversity of each individual’s lived experiences. As a Board, we seek to recruit and retain a diverse mix of individuals who are representative of the diversity in our local communities. We are aware that we need to increase our diversity so if you are from a minority group, we very much encourage you to apply and we welcome your application.
