Art Of Recovery

We are a family friendly arts and crafts group who meet once a week on a Saturday, from 2pm-4pm, at the Freedom building, Church Street, Blackpool, FY13PF.

This is a drop in so people can come and go but we try to keep consistency, however we do get regular clients.

We support those who are in recovery from drugs and alcohol dependency, and/or struggle with mental health or learning difficulties.

Your input will be welcomed and valued, and you will get plenty of support from the Volunteer coordinator at Horizon drugs and alcohol service

Role outline

The group runs weekly on a Saturday, we require volunteers to attend between the hours 1.45pm -2.15pm

Responsibilities will include:

  • Assisting in setting up the room before people arrive.
  • Supporting in making refreshments for the clients such as biscuits, cakes, and a hot drink or juice.
  • When it is a special occasion - assist in planning small parties for the clients, such as at Christmas or Easter time.
  • Assisting in ensuring all areas are clean and tidy on arrival and at the end of the group. Ensuring the room is left as we find it, sanitising at the end of each session, i.e. no rubbish left, crumbs, glitter/paint etc, we always encourage clients to support one another with this.
  • Working together to make a welcoming, non-judgemental atmosphere for the clients and their children/grandchildren or anyone who drops in. We always encourage clients to support newcomers and be kind and welcoming.
  • Ensuring positive language and communications are used, discourage bad language or discussions that are not child friendly, (we have a space in another room for anyone struggling or who may become emotional to vent their concerns/feelings and we signpost where appropriate, always keeping safeguarding at the forefront of our liaisons with our clients.)
  • Assisting in ensuring all clients have been recorded on the register.
  • Encouraging clients to offer feedback which will help improve our service, and monitor if we are meeting the needs of the clients (this assists when applying for funding enabling the group to continue to run)

What skills do I need?

This opportunity would suit anyone wanting to work with people who are struggling or families, and our volunteers can gain a lot of experience from this client facing role.

There is no need to be particularly creative for this opportunity but an interest in creative activities such as art, card making, sewing, colouring or any other crafts would be very welcomed. We often plan sessions around client’s preferences of activities within budget and reason, always asking for their feedback on the service and developing the provision we offer where we can.

Experience working with vulnerable groups and or children would be an advantage but not essential.

Lived experience of recovery is also an advantage too in any of the areas mentioned previously, as the volunteer would then have some insight into the challenges the clients face, but this is not essential.
