Memory Walk is a sponsored walk where participants complete a route planned by Alzheimer's Society.

For most walks there is an option of a shorter or longer route. The shorter routes are between 1.5km and 3km, and the longer routes are between 5-10km, depending on the venue.

Participants will start and finish at the event site, where there are toilets, refreshments, activities, a stage, and the start and finish line.

Memory Walks couldn’t happen without our fantastic volunteers and this Autumn, thousands of walkers will raise millions of pounds, to give help and hope to anyone affected by dementia.

We ask all of our volunteers to arrive before the walkers, so we have plenty of time to get everyone signed in, allocated a role and briefed about the event. Your shift will be from 8:45am to approx. 2:30pm.

When you arrive, head to the volunteer gazebo, where you will be signed in and given your role for the day.

Once you’ve signed in, we’ll give you a volunteering t-shirt, and a token for your refreshments.

All of our volunteer roles are done in pairs, and so whether you’re volunteering with a friend, or coming along solo, you won’t be alone at the event.

Our shifts are spilt into two different roles, Event Site and Route.

For roles on the event site, you could be stationed at one of our gazebos to sell merchandise, give out information to participants, or help participants fill out their tags for the Memory Tree. If you are working on the merchandise tent you will be handling money.

Event site volunteers also help keep the site clean and tidy, and support with ad-hoc jobs throughout the day.

Your event team will give you a full briefing at the event with more information about how these roles operate.

For roles on the walk routes, you will be based with at least one other volunteer at a marshal point.

Route marshals are super important to make sure all walkers are heading in the right direction, giving them big cheers and lots of encouragement!

If you are a route volunteer, you will be given an event-day briefing, and be given a high vis vest, radio and safety lanyard.

After your briefing, you will have an opportunity to use the facilities and grab a snack before your event team ask you to head out to your marshal point.

Your marshal point will be labelled with a small sign, so you’ll know when you’re in the right place! When you get there, radio your event team to let us know you’re in the right spot.

You’ll stay at your marshal point whilst walkers are on the route and be relieved by a pair of back-marker volunteers, who walk the route at the end of the participants, so we know everyone has completed the route safely.

We do have the opportunity for you actually walk the route too as a Back Marker. The back marker walks behind the last group of participants to ensure everyone completes the route safely. They also cut down the route signage, and release route marshals from their points.

I

What skills do I need?

We would love any volunteers who have previous experience volunteering on outdoor events or charity events, however this isn't essential. You should have a happy, positive attitude!

On the Event site, if you are working on the merchandise tent, experience in cash handling would be valuable.

Route volunteers should have a can do attitude, especially if the weather isn't great! You won't mind walking out to your marshal point, this could be the furthest point from the event site and should feel comfortable being stood up for a few hours.

If you are interested in being a back marker you won't mind walking the full 8km route.
