Surplus Food charity - Van driver (afternoons)

FareShare Sussex & Surrey redistributes surplus food from our busy warehouse in Moulsecoomb, Brighton, to community organisations across Sussex and Surrey. Our work helps reduce food waste and provides food to around 25,000 people every week.

Help keep surplus food moving across Sussex and Surrey.

Each afternoon, you'll collect a fully loaded van from our Brighton warehouse and drive it to our Guildford hub. Once the food has been transferred, you'll return to Brighton with the empty van. It's a straightforward, regular route that plays an important part in getting surplus food to the communities we support.

This could be a great fit if you enjoy driving, like having a clear routine and want to make a practical difference.

The Role

• Driving a charity van from Brighton to Guildford, then returning to Brighton
• Afternoon shifts, 13:30–17:30
• Occasionally collecting surplus food from local suppliers
• Carrying out vehicle checks before each shift
• Representing FareShare Sussex & Surrey

Practical Considerations

• Complete a free driving assessment before starting. This takes no more than an hour and helps us make sure you’re comfortable and confident driving our vehicles.
• Our warehouse is based in Moulsecoomb, Brighton. It’s easily accessible by bus (routes 25, 28, 29 and 50, with a stop at Moulsecoomb Way) or around a 10–15 minute walk from Moulsecoomb train station.
• Reasonable travel expenses are covered, and a delicious, freshly cooked lunch on site before your shift.

Support Disabled

We welcome volunteers with a range of abilities and additional support needs and are happy to discuss individual requirements with applicants before they start. Where possible, we will look at reasonable adjustments or adaptations that may help someone take part safely and comfortably. This could include additional guidance, adapting tasks where practical, or agreeing suitable ways of working. The role does involve driving, loading and unloading food and some physical activity, so some aspects may not be suitable for everyone. The warehouse and office also have some accessibility limitations, including no lift to the upstairs kitchen and office space. Our ability to provide additional support is limited, so we consider each request on an individual basis and will be open and honest about what we can offer. We encourage anyone with specific support or accessibility needs to discuss these with us before volunteering.

What skills do I need?

We welcome volunteers from a broad range of backgrounds and experiences. You don’t need to tick every box or have worked in a similar role before.

• For this driving role we ask for the following: 
• A full, clean UK driving licence
• Volunteers to be aged 25 or over for insurance purposes
• Good timekeeping and reliability, as our deliveries run to a set schedule
• A commitment to one regular shift per week
• The ability to work well with others and communicate positively with colleagues and volunteers
• A positive and respectful approach to working with people from a wide range of backgrounds.
