Everyone wants to meet friends and have an enjoyable social life including people with learning disabilities. As a volunteer befriender you can provide the one-to-one support and friendship that allows a person with learning disabilities to play a more active part in their community.

How you can help

Your support and friendship could help a person get out and socialise with people of their own age rather than their parents or carers. This added freedom can help them to build their self-confidence, social skills and independence.

There is also the opportunity to help at our regular activity sessions, which feature everything from games and discos to barbecues and trips out.

What befriending involves

Being a volunteer befriender is a serious but enjoyable commitment. It involves spending a few hours every month with your friend doing things you both enjoy. You can take them for a drink or a bite to eat, help them do some shopping, go bowling or simply stay in for a chat. You do not need any special qualifications, but a responsible attitude and a patient, caring nature are essential - and even a little bit of your time could make a big difference.
