Happy Wednesday Volunteers support sessions at the Billericay Men's Shed which is specifically for men/women/living well with dementia. 

Billericay Men's Shed is a community space for men to connect, converse and create. The Wednesday Shed is specifically for men/women living well with dementia.

The sessions are held at Lake Meadow park in Billericay, Essex and runs from 10am to 12 midday on Wednesdays.

The Shed has been renamed 'Happy Wednesday' by the group participants because of the fun and joy it brings to all involved. 

What skills do I need?

The role will report to the Volunteer Co-ordinator 

Key Role: to work with attendees by putting them at ease and assisting them in undertaking various activities such as painting, sanding and varnishing woodwork items, quizzes, games and any other activities planned for the sessions. Whilst making the activities fun and ensuring all participate in some way. 

You must be able to:

  • Communicate in a clear and friendly manner on an individual level or as part of the group
  • Adapt the support required to individuals needs and to the running of the session
  • Be empathetic to the challenges faced by attendees
  • Encourage participation in activities and in-still confidence in participants
  • Have a positive 'can do' attitude
  • Show patience and understanding to the individuals whilst undertaking activities
  • Have confidence in meeting new people, talking and socialising
  • Demonstrate good interaction and working relationships with fellow volunteers and group Trustees

Other roles and responsibilities:

  • Ensure health and safety is maintained at the shed as per guidelines
  • Ensure safe working practices are followed and a safe environment is maintained
  • Report any adverse incidents or accidents as per sheds policy/guidance
  • Ensure the sheds code of conduct is adhered to
  • Report anything that you may be concerned about in relation to attendees or activities to the volunteer co-ordinator or a shed Trustee
  • Be welcoming and responsive to visitors to the shed from other outside organisations/groups

Training and Support:

  • You will receive a full induction that relates to the role
  • You will be supported by the groups volunteer co-ordinator and the Billericay Men's Shed Trustees
