School governors play a vital role in supporting and challenging school leaders to ensure every child receives the best possible education. Governors help shape the school's strategic direction, monitor performance, oversee finances, and make sure decisions are always in the best interests of children.

You don't need to be an education expert. We welcome people from all backgrounds who can bring their skills, experience, enthusiasm, and fresh perspectives to the role.

The role involves attending governing board meetings, reading papers in advance, and taking an active interest in the life of the school by pre-arranged visits during the day. Training and ongoing support are provided.

What skills do I need?

No specialist background is required to become a governor. While experience in areas such as strategic leadership, finance, education, HR or safeguarding can be valuable, it is not essential. An interest in the school’s long-term success, a willingness to ask thoughtful questions, and the confidence to both support and challenge constructively are all important qualities.
