Community Spirit are a group of adults who enjoy volunteering in the Gosport community. They volunteer at local events as stewards, litter picks, volunteering on their community allotment, fundraising for other local charities, plus much more.
They have a drop-in twice a week, here at Martin Snape House in Gosport, on a Monday and Thursday, where they come and chat, take part in activities to boost mental health, art projects, quizzes and catch up on the latest volunteering opportunities.
Community Spirit members are supported because they have mental health and/or learning barriers, for example autism.
Your role as an Activity Support Volunteer, would be to help by being an extra pair of hands, eyes and ears, as well as support when we are out and about, volunteering in the community, re-assuring members and helping the Coordinator.
If you are looking for an opportunity that supports people in a fun and varied way, then supporting this enthusiastic group might be just right for you.
What skills do I need?
Do you have practical skills; you don't have to be an expert but willing to have a go and support others to do the same, for example setting up teas and coffees for a drop-in; organising resources for an art session.
You need to be someone who gets on well with people and accepts that they may have different ways of expressing themselves.
Have you got the ability to listen to people, without making judgements or corrections, who may find it challenging to express their feelings. Are you able to recognise when you need to carefully steer inappropriate conversations onto safer ground. Do you have empathy for people who struggle in social groups.
