As a Peer Supporter, your expertise from your own personal experience of mental distress will be at the heart of your role. You will use your own experiences to empathise with and support people who are experiencing mental distress. This role is open to anybody with experience of using mental health services who feel they have the skills to support others. You will work alongside clients who live in one of Together's 24 hour residential services who live in Winchester or Basingstoke, accompanying them along their road to recovery.

We are looking for volunteers who have lived experience of mental health distress and have been in and experienced the mental health system. The role of the peer supporter is invaluable as often our clients find it difficult to make connections and access the community alone.

Many of the clients will have come from a mental health hospital or from the ministry of justice backgrounds so any personal lived experience of this nature is valuable to us. If you have lived experience of substance misuse, a forensic background, self harm, been a previous service user, experienced stigma and have been in and out of the mental health system we are particularly of interested to hear from you. You will not be judged and do not need to deem yourself fully recovered to apply. You would need to have had time in recovery and be well enough to support someone else.

For the role consistency and reliability are important. We require a minimum of six months commitment from you on a weekly basis during the day (mid-week) to see service users as well as your availability mid-week for any team meetings, supervision and ongoing training and support. Please note we do not accept work placements or students in psychology.

Training will be provided and on-going support from Cherie, your peer support co-coordinator. Mandatory Safeguarding Adults training will also be provided to all volunteers.

Feedback consistently shows that our clients highly value the support they receive from those who have "been there" themselves. If you do have experience of managing mental distress or of using mental health services, then we would love to hear from you.

What skills do I need?

Personal lived experience of mental distress and experience of using mental health services, either currently or in the past.

Good interpersonal skills including active listening and empathy are required. Patience and a non-judgmental approach are both essential.
