Neutering Volunteer

At Cats Protection we passionately believe that neutering cats before they can breed is an essential part of cat ownership, and without neutering the UK’s cat population would quickly get out of control. Our neutering volunteers help spread positive neutering messages and make it easier for owners on low incomes to get their cats neutered. They help raise awareness of the benefits of neutering, promote our neutering schemes and respond to enquiries from members of the public.

What can you expect to be doing?

• Promoting the benefits of neutering and our neutering schemes
• Responding to enquiries about neutering
• Completing relevant neutering paperwork and distributing neutering vouchers
• Managing the branch's neutering budget
• Assessing eligibility for our subsidised neutering scheme
• Following up with cat owners to make sure that vouchers are used
• Ensuring all cats and kittens are neutered in line with Cats Protection policies and procedures  

A bit more information about this role and the team. We are looking for a volunteer to join our friendly team, this role is a busy one but there is help available, full training will be given, you need to be confident is liaising with people of all levels, phone, email and in person. We are a friendly bunch and have social events should you wish to get more involved. Although this role is for our Southampton branch, there is no requirement to live in the Southampton area as the role can be carried out remotely.

Time expectation

Our neutering volunteers usually spend between two to four hours a week in this role, which is flexible and can be shared by more than one volunteer if needed.

Support, guidance and keeping you safe

At Cats Protection we believe our volunteers should be happy and confident in their roles. We provide support and guidance from our National Cat Centre and through our regional and local volunteer groups and teams. We offer engaging online and face-to-face training, expenses and have policies and processes to help volunteers get the most out of their time with us.

The wellbeing of our people is important and at Cats Protection we are committed to safeguarding children, adults at risk and all those that we come into contact with as part of our activities.

What skills do I need?

Admin:

• Responding to email enquiries (Office 365)
• Recording the details of vouchers issued on our in-house database
• Writing and posting out vouchers

Resource management:

• Assessing applicants' eligibility for our subsidised neutering scheme (includes declining some applications)
• Maintaining your stock of neutering vouchers
• Adhering to the branch's neutering budget

Customer service:

• Responding to enquiries in a professional and timely manner
• Escalating any issues to the Branch Coordinator

Teamwork:

• Whilst this is a home-based role there is a need to work with other volunteers in the branch 
• Liaising with the Branch Coordinator, Branch Development Manager, and our central Neutering team

No experience necessary as we provide full training, however an understanding of cat welfare, budgeting, and barriers to seeking veterinary care would be an advantage.
