The responsibilities of a primary school Governing Body are typically grouped into three core functions:-

Vision, Ethos, and Strategic Direction: Governors establish the vision and values of the school and set the strategic framework, including agreeing on aims and objectives, to achieve that vision.

Accountability: They act as a "critical friend" by holding the Headteacher to account for the school’s educational performance, pupil outcomes, and the performance management of staff. This involves asking challenging questions and scrutinising performance data.

Financial Oversight: Governors oversee the financial performance of the school, ensuring that the budget is managed effectively and resources are allocated appropriately to provide value for money and support the strategic objectives.

What skills do I need?

No specific professional qualifications are required to be a governor; the most valuable assets are commitment, enthusiasm, and a willingness to learn.

Governing bodies collectively benefit from a diverse range of skills, but key personal attributes and capabilities include:

• Commitment - A strong dedication to the role, the school's vision, and improving outcomes for all children.
• Strategic Thinking - The ability to focus on long-term goals and direction rather than operational details.
• Inquisitiveness & Analysis - Being able to read complex documents, understand data (e.g., pupil performance, financial reports), ask pertinent questions, and challenge appropriately.
• Teamwork & Interpersonal Skills - The ability to work constructively with other governors, the Headteacher, and staff, and to respect collective responsibility for decisions.
• Integrity & Objectivity - Acting with honesty, maintaining confidentiality, and making evidence-based decisions without personal bias, always prioritising the best interests of the school.
• Willingness to Learn - Being open to undertaking training and developing knowledge about educational policy, finance, and governance best practices.
