Are you ready to make a real impact? As a Special Constable, you’ll be at the heart of your community -protecting, supporting, and standing up for those who need it most. This isn’t just volunteering. It’s a chance to be part of something bigger.

As a Special Constable, you’ll hold full police powers, and no two shifts will ever be the same. The wide range of incidents, operations, and community events make this a varied and fulfilling volunteer role. You could:

-        Respond to Emergencies: Attend incidents where your quick thinking and problem-solving will be vital in making a difference.

-        Investigate Crimes: Arrest suspects, collect evidence, and work with victims and witnesses to achieve justice.

-        Engage with Communities: Build trust and maintain relationships with diverse communities to identify and solve local issues.

-        Tackle New Challenges: Adapt to an ever-changing criminal landscape, including cybercrime, fraud, and organised crime.

One day you might be helping a vulnerable person in crisis, the next you could be part of a high-visibility operation to deter crime.

What skills do I need?

Most people already have the skills we’re looking for - communication, empathy, problem-solving, and the ability to stay calm under pressure. If you care about your community and want to make a difference, you’re already halfway there.

Training

The training journey spans several months and is designed to be empowering, inspiring and transformative. As a Special Constable, you’ll be expected to attend every session, because each one is a vital step in building the confidence, knowledge, and skills you’ll need to make an impact. It’s a big commitment, but it’s also an incredible opportunity to grow, challenge yourself, and be fully prepared to step into a role that truly matters.

All training takes place at our Southern Training & Support Headquarters in Hamble. Sessions involve both weekend and evening classes. The course is split into two phases and is followed by the practical application of the skills at your allocated police station.

 Initial training Phase 1

Phase 1 is mainly classroom based and involves learning more about the Constabulary, some of the IT systems we use, and essential legislation. You will attend a series of workshops and undertake home study to support your learning. At the end of this phase, there is an exam that students must pass in order to proceed to phase 2.

 Initial training Phase 2

Phase 2 involves learning practical operational skills, such as statement taking, first aid and public and personal safety training. There’s also some home study for you to complete to help you prepare for the training sessions. Assessment of skills takes place throughout the training to ensure that you are ready to undertake operational duty at your assigned station, with the support of regular officers
