An Independent Visitor is a volunteer who befriends a young person (aged between 5 and 18) who is looked after in care.

It is an increasingly vital and valuable role that can make a positive difference to a child’s life.

Through monthly face to face activities you will motivate and inspire a young person to develop new interests, skills, or hobbies, and take them out to a variety of places such as the cinema, bowling or go for a walk or to the park.

You could also help encourage them on their educational journey and help support them with vital life skills and development.

Maintaining monthly contact through shared activities not only provides the perfect setting for having fun and sharing goals, it can also provide a safe space should the young person wish to seek guidance or help should they have any concerns or worries.

Amongst all of the statutory agencies involved with a looked after child, it is important that we are there as an independent person just for them and we are consistent throughout the many changes they may face whilst in care.

What skills do I need?

Each person has their own unique skillset and we are particularly looking for volunteers who:

- Have a genuine kind and caring attitude and who will be committed to making a long term positive commitment to a young person who is looked after within the care system.

- Have excellent communication and listening skills and who will be willing and able to undertake safe fun activities and be a good role model throughout.

- Will commit to complete all required training to fulfil the role and thereafter follow all safeguarding procedures and service requirements whilst undertaking the role as Independent Visitor.

- Be able to commit to monthly activities averaging between 2-6 hours (depending on the chosen activity) once they are fully accredited and matched with a child.
