We are looking for volunteers (ideally based near Kent) to sing with our team of exceptional musicians and the women of HMP East Sutton Park every Thursday afternoon from 12.00 - 2.00 pm all year round.

You will have the opportunity to attend a taster session with us to get a feel for our choir programmes. If you have decided you would like to commit to volunteering with us, you will need to complete prison security clearance before you attend your first formal session at East Sutton Park.

We know that attending Liberty Choir can have a significant impact on reducing reoffending rates. Our sessions are designed to help develop prisoners’ skills and self-confidence, open up the world of arts through singing and provide access to new social networks when they re-enter the wider community.

Liberty Choir is a national charity bringing members of the public into prisons across the UK to sing with our choir of musicians, volunteers and prisoners every week. Our sessions are designed to build prisoners’ self-confidence and provide access to new social networks in the wider community.

With your help, we can support even more prisoners through their sentence and help them get a second chance at life through the power of music and community.

“I’ve not had a visitor for six years. The choir is my social community” (Carl, prisoner)

“I have been attending Coldingley since January 2023, and have noticed a monumental change in a couple of the prisoners who started at the same time as me. Those that disrupted now engage each other; it is quite wonderful” (Nikki, volunteer)

What skills do I need?

The choir sings from music sheets as well as learning songs by heart, and has a wide repertoire from swing and gospel to pop and classical. No special skills are required, but a love of music and singing are important.

You don't need to have a great voice or be able to read music.

A supportive, positive and caring attitude is essential.
