Our schools and College provide inspirational and unique environments where young people can flourish.

The leading provider of schools for children with Special Educational Needs in Newcastle upon Tyne. We have 2 schools, based in Forest Hall and Jesmond that offer specialist provision education for a range of complex physical disabilities and learning difficulties, and cater for children and teenagers aged 3 to 19 years old.

Our college for post 19 students, provide opportunities for learning and development of students’ awareness, understanding, knowledge and skills that promote independence and prepare the student for transition to adult life.

We don’t just provide education, we offer a person-centred, multidisciplinary approach based on each individual child or young person’s needs.

Our schools and college are staffed with highly skilled professionals, from Special Educational Needs teachers and Learning Support Assistants, to Physiotherapists, Speech and Language Therapists, and Occupational Therapists.

We support children and young people with:

  • Cerebral Palsy and Motor Disorders
  • Autism and Communication Difficulties
  • Visual Impairment and Blind
  • Deaf and Hearing Impairment
  • Profound and Multiple Learning Disability
  • Receptive, expressive and pragmatic language difficulties

We are looking for volunteers to help in our schools and college on a regular basis across all year groups to assist with activities, assisting in the classroom, helping to support children and young people during

  • outside activities,
  • arts and crafts,
  • music,
  • school trips
  • and lots of other opportunities.

If you could commit to a regular day/time each week this would be so helpful to the classes. It’s important that volunteers are committed to coming into school, as the Teachers/Tutors will plan activities on the basis that there will be a volunteer in class. If you could spare a day or half day or even more time in your week to help in school, we would be very grateful.

This role forms part of Volunteer Passport Scheme Newcastle and requires you to complete one day of training with Newcastle City Learning.

If you would like to apply please email [email protected]

What skills do I need?

  • You will ideally have experience of education and children and young people with additional educational needs though this is not essential, more importantly you need to have a willingness to learn and be willing to help and be able to take instruction.
  • You will be a ‘people person’, and very patient, interested in supporting the education of our young people and able to commit to a regular volunteering slot wherever possible.
  • You will be a good communicator and understand that some of our group have communication challenges such as visual impairment, hearing loss or communication difficulties.
  • You may have previous experience in British Sign Language or Makaton which would be extremely helpful.
