Daft as a Brush Cancer Patient Care (DAAB) provide free transport to patients receiving cancer treatment at Newcastle’s Freeman Hospital. We have a fleet of distinctive ambulances, manned by a dedicated and compassionate team of volunteer drivers and companions.

The Role:

  • Collect and deliver patients to predetermined locations, in a safe and timely manner.
  • All vehicles and equipment to be used in line with DAAB training and procedures.
  • Always ensure the highest levels of patient confidentiality.
  • Ensure ambulance is ready for service at the start and end of every day.
  • Deliver the highest standards of patient safety and comfort.
  • Adhere to DAAB Code of Conduct. 

Multiple opportunities exist. We ask volunteers to commit a full day at a time due to scheduling requirements

What skills do I need?

  • Hold a full UK car license.
  • Age limits – minimum 25 years, maximum 75 years (at time of application).
  • Able to commit to a full day of volunteering, occasionally starting and finishing at an unsociable hour
  • Proficient in driving a larger vehicle while carrying passengers, and comfortable driving across the region and in built up areas.
  • Access to emails and able to use a mobile phone/computer.
  • No medical conditions affecting your ability to drive or meet the key responsibilities of role.
  • Effective communication skills, and able to handle sensitive situations with empathy and tact.
  • Good time management and organisation skills.
  • The suitability of an applicant at this stage will be assessed using an application form and interview.
  • Later stages of the application will include a health assessment and driving assessment.
  • Unsuccessful applicants can reapply after a minimum of six months.
