Description
Newcastle Vision Support is seeking volunteers to assist with our regular social groups and occasional off-site visits. We offer various social groups for visually impaired individuals to meet, support one another, socialise, and participate in activities. This role requires some knowledge of or a keen interest in working with community groups and promoting social interaction to improve well-being. Our groups include Art, Walking, Knit and Natter, Chair Exercise, monthly Guest Speakers, and visits to museums or galleries.
The volunteer will be required to:
Greet service users from their taxis
Guide people in and around the building or on a walk
Serve refreshments
Chat with participants and make sure they are included
Set up / tidy the room, and keep the room clean and tidy during the group
Assist participants on a 1-1 basis for various activities, e.g. Arts and Crafts. Suggest ideas for monthly guest speakers
About Organisation
We were established in 1867, and our mission has remained consistent since our inception: to support visually impaired individuals in maintaining their independence through information and learning activities. We focus on helping them stay connected with people, services, social groups, and empowerment initiatives. As a completely independent local society, we proudly serve over 1,000 visually impaired individuals in Newcastle.
What skills do I need?
Skills
Experience in or an interest in working with community groups!
Experience or interest in working with visually impaired people / disabled people.
Experience or interest in promoting ways to improve mental health and wellbeing. Friendly and helpful
Experience working with vulnerable adults
Experience or interest in organising speakers, talks and events. Confidence and leadership skills
