As a Tutor-Befriender, you will play a key role in helping young people reach their full potential.

Working from home or in-person, you will use video-conferencing tools and other learning platforms to support children and young people who attend our Learning Hubs.

You will deliver tutoring and mentoring sessions in subjects and age groups that you are most comfortable with.

Your support will take place over 6-week blocks, working either one-to-one or with two learners from the same year group. In addition to providing academic support, you will help to build confidence, motivation, and a positive attitude toward learning.

Main Responsibilities

  • Deliver one-to-one or small-group tuition (online or in-person) to young people aged 8–18.
  • Encourage, motivate, and support learners in their academic and personal development.
  • Act as a positive role model by promoting enthusiasm, commitment, and resilience.
  • Maintain regular communication with Success4All staff and follow safeguarding procedures.

Full training will be provided, including safeguarding and guidance on online learning tools

Volunteers are supported throughout their placement by Success4All’s Volunteer Coordinator and Hub Leaders.

Online Sessions will be on google meet, while in-person sessions will be at the Angelou Centre, NE4 5NS (All transportation cost is covered by Success4All)

There will also be opportunities to help us create and develop resources for learning and/or add-ons to our tutoring service. Volunteers can also gain an AQA Level 3 ‘Acting as a tutor-befriender’ certificate.

What skills do I need?

  • Obtain a C/5 grade or above in English and Maths
  • If over 16, hold a valid DBS check from another organisation under 1 year old, or be willing to obtain one with S4A
  • Commit to at least 1 session per week on the same day for 6 weeks
  • Be reliable and committed
  • Be able to communicate well with the children, staff and other volunteers
  • Have a warm and friendly approach in order to befriend the children and young people
  • Be patient and calm
  • Be passionate about the organisation and teaching
  • Some proficiency using video-conferencing applications such as Zoom or Google Meet
