As a unit helper you’ll give girls opportunities for fun, friendship, challenge and adventure!  You’ll usually work with other volunteers to help run fantastic activities, whilst keeping members safe.

You’ll be part of a leadership team that includes at least one unit leader, assistant leaders and possibly also young leaders and other unit helpers. No two units are the same which means that all unit helpers do slightly different things.

There is a lot of space to make this role your own. There are opportunities with Rainbows (aged 4 to 7), Brownies (aged 7 to 10), Guides (aged 10 to 14), and Rangers (aged 14 to 18).

Why Girlguiding? We show girls from 4 to 18 a world of possibilities big and small. One where every girl can laugh and learn and be herself. Girlguiding is what each girl wants it to be. It might be the thrill of doing something for the first time. Songs around a campfire. The buzz of getting a new badge. Coming home exhausted and full of stories. It’s a space where she can be herself, get creative, explore, and most of all have fun.

When you volunteer prepare to have fun, meet great people and help run activities that inspire members to discover their potential. As your volunteering journey progresses, you will be provided with opportunities to develop, train and lead. Everything is up to the individual.

Unit meetings are usually an hour to an hour and a half once a week.

What skills do I need?

  • Good listening and communication, helping your unit leaders and other volunteers deliver great guiding for girls.  .
  • Attention to detail, (there is a great team to support you).
  • Knowing when to ask for help
  • Willingness to learn
  • Learning as you go to keep your skills fresh.
