Serve is a successful local charity providing a range of support services to older people and disabled people in the community, it aims to maintain the independence of its service users through provision of domiciliary and personal care, transport, cultural, educational and health activities and has ambitious plans for the future expansion.

The board of Directors of SERVE are also Trustees of the charity. The board is responsible for setting the strategy and policies of SERVE and guides and supports the Chief Executive Officer of the charity.

Trustees should

  • Use responsible care and skill in their work as trustees, using their personal skills and experience as needed to support the charity to run well and efficiently
  • Consider getting external professional advice on all matters where there may be material risk to the charity, or where the trustees may be in breach of their duties 
  • Safeguard Serve's name, objectives, values and standards of the charity 
  • Be able to maintain confidentiality on sensitive and confidential information 
  • Contribute actively to giving strategic direction to the charity, setting overall policy, defining goals, setting targets and evaluating performance against agreed targets.
  • Make the best use of the financial benefits available to the charity
  • Make the best use of assets of the charity, such as buildings
  • Be aware of, and fulfil their responsibilities as employers
  • Appoint and support a Chief Executive Officers and monitor his/her performance 
  • Make the best use of staff and volunteers
  • Safeguard the wellbeing and interests of service users
  • Consider the benefits of collaborative working and promote when appropriate, be constructive about other trustees' opinions in discussion 
  • Be able to make collective decision and stand by them




What skills do I need?

Personal qualities 

  • Integrity
  • Confidence and willingness to speak their mind 
  • Demonstrate a strong and visible passion and commitment to the charity, its strategic objectives and cause
  • Demonstrate tact and diplomacy, with the ability to listen and engage effectively

Experience 

  • Successful track record of achievement for their specialist skill where required

Knowledge 

  • understand and accept legal duties, responsibilities and liabilities of a trustee
  • Be able to analyse information and, where necessary, challenge constructively 
  • Strategic vison
  • An ability to think creatively
  • An ability to work effectively as a member of a team
