What are cancer champions?

• Local people who have a passion to help improve health conditions for their local community, understanding that early diagnosis of cancer is essential in helping save people’s lives.

• They may have lived experience of cancer or just share our passion for raising awareness to reduce the impact of cancer.

• Actively engaged in their community and happy to start conversations around cancer.

• They are from a variety of different communities and backgrounds.

• They are able to have everyday conversations with family, friends, and colleagues about cancer.

• No previous experience is required, as full training will be provided.

What skills do I need?

What does a cancer champion do?

• Start conversations about spotting signs and symptoms of cancer and understanding the three national screening programmes.

• Encourage people to take up screening invitations, know their body and report any concerns to health professionals.

• Listen and feedback the experiences and concerns of their community to help us to understand what would make things better.

• Share helpful information and signpost to local health services.

• Use every opportunity to encourage discussion around cancer, busting myths and sharing key facts.

• Deliver the messages with care and sensitivity, and in a way that is meaningful to their community.

What we ask of our champions:

• Be open and willing to attend training.

• Feedback their insights and experiences.

• Give as much or as little time as they can – the role is flexible.

• Have a regular check in with your local cancer champion coordinator.

• Tell others about the cancer champion role and encourage them to join us.

• Some cancer champions may wish to get involved with other awareness activities, such as information stands at community events or giving a talk to work colleagues.

What we can offer:

• Cancer Champion training: a half day session on understanding cancer signs and symptoms, screening programmes, and having conversations about cancer.

• Ongoing support from your local Cancer Champion Coordinator.

• A range of helpful handouts and resources.
