Social Media Volunteer

Portsmouth Black Stories is an oral history project funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund, which aims to uncover the rich and diverse history of Black lives in Portsmouth. In this project, members of the African and Caribbean community will interview and record the firsthand stories of African and Caribbean pioneers who came to Portsmouth to build lives here before 1980. These interviews will be used by local schools and the wider Portsmouth public to inspire interest in local hidden histories.

As the Social Media Volunteer you will be responsible for creating and posting engaging content on one or all of the Black History Group’s social media platforms, including Facebook, BlueSky and Instagram.

·       You can choose to work only on one platform if you prefer, or on all of them, depending on how well you know each social media platform.

 

·       You will create weekly posts to promote Portsmouth’s Black history, project events, volunteering opportunities, and community activities, helping to raise awareness of the project in the local community.

While the role can be carried out entirely remotely, there is also the option to work occasionally alongside the Oral History Manager at Central Library or Carnegie Library for those who would prefer a more collaborative, in-person experience.

We are happy to provide references for individuals seeking work who are using this volunteering role to gain experience or build work history once they have completed 6 weeks in the role.

This is a grassroots, collaborative, community-led initiative which seeks to empower the people of Portsmouth and the Portsmouth Harbour area to build upon the initiative and continue to uncover and make visible Black history in Portsmouth.

What skills do I need?

·        Experience in creating and posting content on one or all of the following social media platforms: BlueSky, Facebook and/or Instagram

·       Experience in using Canva might be useful but is not essential
