Volunteer Gallery Invigilator

Be part of the Aspex Portsmouth volunteer team! As a Gallery Invigilator, you’ll help create a welcoming, enjoyable environment for visitors while keeping an eye on our exhibitions and helping visitors enjoy the space respectfully.

Aspex is a free contemporary visual arts organisation and registered charity based in Gunwharf Quays, Portsmouth. Showcasing the work of emerging artists, Aspex has a changing programme of exhibitions, artist support activities, and participatory projects and workshops.

In this role, you will:

- Be a friendly and welcoming presence in the gallery

- Monitor the artworks and help prevent accidental damage

- Gently remind visitors, particularly children and families, about how to safely enjoy and engage with the artwork

- Answer questions and share information about the exhibitions where you can

- Let the Aspex team know about any concerns, damage or issues in the gallery

- Help keep the exhibition space welcoming, tidy and cared for

This is a relaxed, people-focused role, perfect for someone who enjoys contemporary art, is observant and comfortable working independently. You don’t need previous gallery experience, just a friendly approach, an interest in the arts, and a willingness to help us look after the gallery and its artworks.

Commitment: One 3-hour shift per week, either Saturday or Sunday, 11am-2pm.

What skills do I need?

This role would be suitable for you if:

- You’re friendly, approachable and enjoy meeting people

- You’re interested in art and gallery spaces

- You’re observant and attentive

- You’re confident giving polite, gentle reminders

- You’re comfortable working independently

- You’re able to commit to a regular weekend shift
