Health & Wellbeing Champions play a key role in supporting the wellbeing of Merstham residents by sharing health information and encouraging healthier lifestyle choices. This voluntary role fits naturally into daily life—whether at home, work, at MCFT, or during leisure time—by gently inspiring others to take small, manageable steps towards better health.

Champions also contribute to a supportive network by confidentially sharing success stories and community needs. This feedback helps MCFT understand what is working well and provides essential evidence to secure our continued funding to support the people of Merstham.

Key Responsibilities:

As a Health & Wellbeing Champion, you may be involved in:

  • Sharing positive health and wellbeing information through everyday conversations with colleagues, neighbours, friends, and community groups.
  • Signposting and encouraging people to engage with relevant local services, including weight-management programmes, stop-smoking services, physical-activity groups, mental-health and wellbeing support, social-connection activities, and more.
  • Developing your knowledge by attending learning workshops and Champion training sessions.
  • Promoting and taking part in wellbeing activities (e.g., lunchtime walks, peer groups, informative coffee mornings, hobby groups, wellbeing challenges).
  • Acting as a positive role model for healthy living and being an approachable source of wellbeing information.
  • Providing feedback, insights and success stories, which:
  •      highlight what matters to the community
  •      help improve services
  •      support the organisation in demonstrating impact to funders, ensuring continued investment in local health and wellbeing programmes

Champions do not provide medical or clinical advice.

What You Will Gain:

  • The chance to make a meaningful difference in your community
  • Increased knowledge and confidence in health promotion
  • New communication and engagement skills
  • Experience that may support career development in health, care, or community roles
  • A sense of belonging within a supportive network
  • Satisfaction from helping shape services through feedback that supports future funding

What skills do I need?

You don’t need specialist knowledge—just enthusiasm and a willingness to help. Ideal qualities include:

  • Interest in health and wellbeing
  • Friendly, approachable, and reliable
  • Good communication and listening skills
  • Supportive, patient, and empathetic
  • Enjoys helping others and connecting with the community
  • Basic understanding of healthy behaviours
  • Willingness to stay up to date with local health initiatives
  • Keen to learn and develop
