Listening Volunteers are the heart of Samaritans, providing emotional support and a lifeline for those in distress, offering a safe space for callers to share their feelings without fear of judgment. Listening Volunteers are trained to provide empathetic, non-judgmental support that can help someone find hope in their darkest moments.
As a Listening Volunteer, you will respond to people in need through calls, emails, online chats or face-to-face as part of our outreach programme. You'll be there to listen, understand, and provide emotional support, helping individuals feel heard and valued. Comprehensive training and ongoing support are provided, so no previous experience is necessary-just a desire to help others and the ability to be compassionate and open-minded.
We are based at 58 West Street, Newbury, RG14 1BD. Two minutes from the Northbrook Street McDonalds, opposite the Lion Pub.
Successful attainment of a DBS as part of the training process is required, but as full training and support are given, no other specific qualifications are needed. We seek individuals who are empathetic, non-judgmental and possess good listening skills. Reliability and a commitment to maintaining confidentiality are essential.

Time commitment: Following training, Listening Volunteers are typically expected to commit to at least one telephone listening shift of about 3 to 4 hours per week, including a regular night shift every five weeks. The exact amount of time depends on the shift undertaken, but we rely on everyone to contribute to ensure we can be there for people when they need us. In addition, there are numerous opportunities throughout the year to engage in our community outreach programmes, offering face-to-face support
