What is volunteering in our Visitor Reception all about?

As a Visitor Reception Volunteer you will be the welcoming face of Sandham to our visitors. Every visitor is special and unique and you will make that visitor’s experience feel personal and valued.

You will check membership cards or sell entry tickets to non-members. You will guide them through the visitor interpretation rooms and then on into the Chapel. You will have the chance to talk to many diverse and fascinating people many of whom have stories of visits many years ago, or who knew Spencer or who had family serving in the First World War.

You will also look after our retail shop with books for sale.

What’s in it for you?

The opportunity to:

  • Enjoy this beautiful place with its special paintings, peaceful surroundings and spectacular views
  • Become part of a friendly and dedicated team
  • Meet lots of different people and make new friends
  • Discover new experiences and learn new skills
  • Take pride in helping to share this special place with new and returning visitors

We are based in Burghclere, Hampshire (close to the Carpenters Arms pub) which is 4.7 miles south of Newbury town centre.

What skills do I need?

People with excellent communication skills, a welcoming manner, a willingness to learn new things and muck in. No previous knowledge of Spencer's work, the Salonika Campaign, art or history is required, as offer comprehensive training and support.
