EWL is a subsidiary of The Inland Waterways Association, a membership charity that works to protect and restore the country's 6,500 miles of canals and rivers. We are a volunteer led not for profit organisation. The income we receive goes back into maintaining the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation for present and future generations to enjoy. The Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation runs through a largely unspoilt part of rural Essex and connects the county town of Chelmsford with the tidal estuary of the river Blackwater at Heybridge Basin. The navigation is 13.8 miles (22.1 km) long and has 13 locks. We greatly value the time and effort that all our volunteers give in order to help our waterways. If you love the waterways and want to give something back, then volunteering with us is for you! We have volunteers working at our mooring locations and along the whole length of the navigation helping to restore and maintain the navigation with tasks varying from lawn cutting, removing invasive plant species, painting, landscaping and building projects. For more information contact the Navigation Manager. We are currently especially looking for volunteers to Skipper and Crew our trip boats taking passengers on short canal boat trips on the canal/river. The money raised from passengers will go back to EWL to help maintain the navigation.
