Hospice care, or palliative care, means caring for someone rather than curing them. St Helena Hospice exists to help local people with an incurable illness to live well and die with dignity and choice - our core services are provided for free and the majority of our work takes place in the community, in people's homes. The yearly cost to provide our services is around £8.9 million. We rely on the generosity of local people to help raise £6.2 million of that total. The gift of time can be just as valuable as a monetary donation and we have in excess of 1,000 volunteers in various roles that support the hospice. Without the support of our wonderful volunteers we would not be able to care for so many patients and their families. We have roles to suit anyone and any time you can give is a valued resource. Volunteering not only supports the hospice, but can give you opportunities such as experience and skills you can use on your CV, plus we offer the Skills Pathway. It's also a great way to meet people and make new friends.
