Are you computer savvy? Do you enjoy sharing your skills and knowledge? Got a bit of free time to volunteer as part of a friendly team?
We are proud to say that the Hangleton and Knoll IT Suite (HaKIT) has been supporting local residents to get online for more than 20 years.
Our free computer drop-ins are led by our qualified IT tutor, David, and supported by volunteers, helping people with their digital needs at their own pace.
We currently have vacancies for volunteers on:
• Tuesdays, 10am–12pm
• Wednesdays, 10am–12pm and 1pm–3pm
These informal, resident-led drop-ins are held in our IT Suite upstairs at St Richard’s Community Centre, Egmont Road, Hove BN3 7FP.
The sorts of things you could be helping learners with could include:
• Using a computer, tablet or mobile phone for the first time
• Searching the internet
• Setting up, accessing and replying to emails
• Paying bills online
• Downloading and using apps
• Phone storage
• Printing
1. Make a real difference in your community
Share
your knowledge and help local people build essential digital skills. With so
many everyday tasks now online, your support can make a lasting difference to
someone’s confidence, independence and wellbeing. It’s a rewarding way to give
something back to your community.
2. Develop your own skills, confidence and initiative
Build
your communication, problem-solving and decision-making skills while keeping up to date with digital
tools. This is a good opportunity for someone who enjoys learning, using
their initiative and supporting others in a practical, hands-on way.
3. Be part of a friendly volunteer team
Meet
new people and become part of a welcoming volunteer community. You’ll co-work with
another volunteer during the session and be part of the wider HaKIT and Hangleton and
Knoll Project (HKP) team, making a positive impact together.
Practical Considerations
Location: St Richard’s Community Centre, Egmont Road, Hove,
BN3 7FP:

Directions: Bus stops nearby: Citybuzz 16, 16a & 47. And a short walk away is: Old Shoreham Road, Stapley Road stop 2, 2b, 59, 59a. Portslade train station is a 12-minute walk away. Free street parking available.
Building accessibility: The IT Suite is up a flight of stairs. There is a Wheelchair Lift available.
We are looking for volunteers who are confident using computers, smartphones or tablets and have a reasonable level of digital literacy. This might include using the internet, email and everyday software such as Microsoft Word and Excel.
You do not need to be an IT expert or know everything about technology. With digital tools evolving so quickly and the growth of AI, what's most important is being willing to learn, research solutions and work alongside learners to find answers together.
We are seeking volunteers who are friendly, approachable and enjoy helping others. Patience, empathy and understanding are essential, as learners will have a wide range of abilities and confidence levels.
Good communication skills and the ability to explain technology in a clear, supportive way are important. Must be able to adapt to different learning styles, pace, additional support needs etc.
