The Chill Out Club, run by Eastleigh Borough and Romsey Mencap, is a relaxed fortnightly evening social club held in a pub in Eastleigh for adults with learning disabilities. It offers members the chance to enjoy a night out with friends, without their usual carers, in a friendly and supportive setting.
Taking place every other Monday from 7pm to 9pm, the club gives members an opportunity to chat with friends, meet new people, enjoy a drink, and sometimes have something to eat. For many members, this is a rare chance to socialise independently and feel part of their local community.
The club has been running for over 15 years and has become a valued and well-established social opportunity for adults with learning disabilities who might otherwise have very limited chances to go out in the evenings.
Each session is supported by a small team of volunteers who work alongside the Club Co-ordinator. Volunteers help welcome members, make sure everyone feels safe and comfortable, get to know members, and contribute to the warm, relaxed and inclusive atmosphere that makes the club so special.
If you’re calm, friendly, relaxed, sociable, a good listener, and genuinely interested in people, this role could be a great fit. Some experience of learning disabilities is needed, whether through family, work, or previous volunteering, but just as important is your approach and willingness to connect.
Volunteering at the Chill Out Club means giving just two hours every fortnight, but the impact you’ll have on members’ confidence, independence and social lives can be significant.
All reasonable expenses will be covered, for instance mileage costs for travelling to the club.
You will need to: - be within reasonable travelling distance of Eastleigh - have your own means to travel to the club
Volunteers must be over 18. A DBS criminal record check will be required.
