Why we need you:

  • Throughout Lions on the Loose, there will be several different ways to support our pride of magnificent lion sculptures that will be on display in Harlow, Epping and Loughton this summer as part of our spectacular public art trail raising vital funds for St Clare Hospice.
  • As a volunteer, you will be an essential part of the trail. Not only will your contribution help the project run smoothly, but by giving us your time, we can concentrate on raising money to ensure the best possible care for our patients.
  • As an In Memory Safari Squad Ranger or Responder, you will help promote our In Memory lion and encourage members of the community to dedicate a name in memory of a loved one.
  • You can volunteer for this role as an individual or as part of a team (e.g. with your workplace or organisation, or with friends and family)

What this role involves:

  • Volunteering independently or working alongside another volunteer where appropriate
  • Speaking with members of the public about the In Memory Lion, how dedications work and how they can get involved
  • Processing donations using a card reader and capturing supporter details via paper forms
  • Supporting the artist during live ‘In Memory’ name inscriptions at events (engaging with the public, explaining what the artist is creating and sharing the meaning behind the lion)
  • Sharing information about the wider Lions on the Loose project and what it aims to achieve
  • Talking about hospice services where appropriate and signposting people to grief and bereavement support services if needed
  • Reporting any concerns or issues to your Volunteer Supervisor.

What’s in it for you:

  • Make a real impact in your local community and be part of something bigger than yourself
  • Learn new skills and gain valuable hands-on experience that can boost your personal and professional growth
  • Connect with people from diverse backgrounds and cultures, broadening your perspective in meaningful ways
  • Build confidence and self-esteem
  • Create lasting memories and meaningful relationships

What commitment we need from you:

  • Availability between 24 July to 10 September
  • Our Safari Squad volunteers are welcome to contribute as little or as much time as they can- whether that’s helping with a few shifts or supporting us regularly throughout the duration of the trail. We ask for a minimum of at least two hours during this period
  • (Responders role only) Available to respond at short notice and/or on an ad hoc basis

If your application is successful:

You will be required to attend one of our Lions on the Loose volunteer induction days on either:

  • Tuesday 7 May at 5.30-7.30pm at the Hospice
  • Wednesday 1 July at 1.30-3.30pm via Zoom
  • Wednesday 22 July at 1.30-3.30pm at the Hospice

During this session, you will meet the St Clare Hospice team, understand more about your volunteer role, complete the paperwork and some basic training needed to volunteer as part of Lions on the Loose, including how to use the Lions on the Loose app and a card reader.

What skills do I need?

  • Friendly and outgoing personality
  • Compassionate communicator, confident talking to and engaging with people
  • Ability to represent the charity positively
  • Can-do attitude
