Could you help safeguard Maldon’s heritage?

Maeldune Trust CIO is seeking a volunteer Treasurer

Maeldune Trust CIO, which operates Maeldune Heritage Centre in Maldon, is looking for a volunteer Treasurer to help oversee the charity’s finances and support its work preserving and sharing local heritage.

This is an important role within a small charitable organisation, working alongside the trustees and the Centre’s manager to ensure that its finances are properly managed and reported.

What skills do I need?

What would the role involve?

The Treasurer would oversee the charity’s accounts and financial records, ensuring that income and expenditure are accurately recorded and that bills, payments and banking are dealt with appropriately.

Key responsibilities include:

Maintaining and checking the accounts, bank transactions and sales records.

Arranging payments to suppliers, artists and staff, including the necessary payroll and tax payments.

Preparing quarterly financial reports for trustee meetings and explaining the charity’s financial position.

Helping prepare the annual accounts, working with the independent examiner and completing the charity’s annual financial reporting.

Supporting the trustees with budgets, financial decisions, insurance renewals and other occasional financial matters.

The role involves regular contact with the Centre’s manager and other trustees. Much of the work can be undertaken flexibly, although some tasks need to be completed to a regular timetable.

What experience is needed?

A sound accounting background is essential. We are looking for someone with professional accounting experience, either currently or previously employed in the field, or someone with comparable, demonstrable financial experience that equips them to manage charity accounts confidently and accurately.

The successful applicant should be comfortable working with spreadsheets, checking financial records, preparing accounts and explaining financial information clearly.

How much time is involved?

The current estimate is an average of around five hours a week, with some variation throughout the year. The work includes regular financial administration, quarterly reporting and a number of annual tasks. An induction and handover would help the successful applicant become familiar with the existing arrangements.

Why volunteer?

This is an opportunity to put valuable financial skills to good use in support of a local heritage charity. Your contribution would help the trustees maintain sound financial oversight and enable Maeldune Heritage Centre to continue serving the local community and its visitors.
