Do you have trustee or governance experience or want the opportunity to gain some? Do you have a passion for improving the lives of young people in your community?

If you said yes, then becoming a Trustee with Basingstoke & Deane Sea Cadets could be for you!

Basingstoke & Deane Sea Cadet Unit is currently looking for enthusiastic and dedicated Trustees to join its Unit Management Team (UMT).

As a Trustee, and under the direction of our current Chairperson, you would work with the other Trustees to support the management of an effective and successful Sea Cadet unit, providing a safe, maintained and serviced space for young people and volunteers.

A Trustee's key tasks are to:

  •  Support the UMT Chairperson to manage a safe, effective, and successful sea cadet unit.
  • Support the UMT in ensuring all unit activities and matters comply with appropriate regulations and Marine Society and Sea Cadet (MSSC) policies.
  • Support the unit’s fundraising efforts.
  • Ensure that all young people and instructors at the unit are engaged in fun and safe activities.
  • Attend a regular UMT meeting – usually one hour, monthly or bi-monthly, on a weekday evening.

What skills do I need?

We are seeking Trustees who are keen to shape their own role and play a pivotal part in defining and securing the long-term future of our Charity.  While this list outlines desirable skills and experience, we encourage anyone who is passionate about our mission and believes they can contribute to apply.

We are looking for the right person to join our team, and we value potential and enthusiasm as much as specific experiences.

  • Financial Acumen: Understanding of financial management, budgeting, and fundraising to help ensure the long-term sustainability of the unit.
  • Governance and Compliance: Knowledge of charity governance, legal requirements, and best practices to ensure the unit operates effectively and ethically.
  • Communication Skills: Excellent verbal and written communication skills to represent the unit to the public, stakeholders, and other organisations.
  • Availability: Willingness to dedicate time to UMT meetings and complete other tasks in your own time.

Training

All new volunteers are required to complete mandatory e-learning modules. This is to ensure that you gain a good level of understanding of Sea Cadets practices.

 These courses include:

  • Adult Induction
  • Sea Cadets – Equity, Diversity and Inclusion
  • Safeguarding at Sea Cadets – Introduction & Virtual/Live Courses
  • Sea Cadets – Responsible for Information
  • Sea Cadets – Health and Safety

Thereafter, should volunteers wish to undertake further training in specific areas, they can discuss this with their Officer in Charge and be booked onto relevant training.
