Every year, Newcastle Dog & Cat Shelter rehomes hundreds of dogs and cats, giving them a second chance at a happy and fulfilling life. Behind every successful rehoming is a team of people working hard to keep the shelter running smoothly, and that includes making sure our animals are fed, our resources are well stocked, and our donated goods reach the people who need them. Our volunteer stores keepers play a crucial role in making all of this possible. By keeping our storage areas organised, well-maintained and compliant with health and safety requirements, you ensure that animal care staff always have what they need, when they need it, and that donated goods are processed efficiently to maximise income for the charity.

What you will be doing:

This is a physically active and varied role that takes place across the shelter site.

Organisation, attention to detail and a willingness to get stuck in are all essential.

• Organising and maintaining all storage areas on site, including food, bedding and donated goods areas, ensuring everything is clearly arranged and easy to access
• Receiving and moving incoming donations into the correct storage areas promptly and safely
• Sorting through donated items to assess suitability, quality and condition, separating usable goods from those that cannot be used
• Rotating food stock regularly to ensure all animal food is within date and usable, flagging any concerns to the relevant team member
• Keeping all storage areas tidy, hazard-free and compliant with health and safety requirements at all times
• Working outdoors in all weather conditions as a regular and expected part of the role
• Collaborating with animal care staff and fellow volunteers to ensure the right supplies are always in the right place

We are looking for volunteers to one session per week, of approximately 3 hours in the afternoon.

A regular weekly commitment is required for this role.

On occasion, we may ask if you are able to help at shelter fundraising events outside of these hours.

What skills do I need?

• A willingness to carry out physical tasks including lifting, carrying and manoeuvring heavy items
• Comfortable working outdoors in all weather conditions
• A willingness to complete a Manual Handling Awareness course as part of your induction
• An organised and methodical approach with good attention to detail
• An understanding of health and safety guidelines is beneficial but not essential - training will be provided
• The ability to adapt quickly and work effectively in a busy, fast-paced environment
• An ability to work well with staff and fellow volunteers across the shelter, as well as independently
• Enthusiasm, reliability and a genuine love of dogs and cats!
