The Letherhead (it is spelt this way on the building) Institute is a substantial building constructed in 1892 by a local benefactor (Abraham Dixon) for the purposes of providing education and recreation for the people of Leatherhead. 70% of the building given over to these charitable purposes and the remaining 30% let out commercially in order to fund the running costs and maintenance the building as there was no endowment provided.
