Migration has always been part of human history and present, as people have moved around to find safety or to seek a decent life for themselves & their families. The north east has a rich cultural history, sitting on major ports with international links. Many different nationalities passed through or remained here, leaving legacies which have become part of north east culture today.

The Conversation Group was started from a desire to practise mutual aid and offer practical support alongside people new to the North East, and people new to the English language.
The group offers a supportive & welcoming space to share information, practise English, make friends, and learn from each other, and strives for equal rights for all. The group holds a weekly meet up session, plus other activities throughout the year. There are also opportunities to volunteer behind the scenes throughout the week.

Your role as a caretaker is to set up the room ready for the group, and tidy up the room at the end of the session.

Tasks include:

  • Opening up the room at around 3pm
  • Turning on the lights
  • Boiling hot water for the urn
  • Putting tea, coffee, sugar, cups, beakers, teaspoons and the urn out for people to use
  • Putting chairs in a circle
  • Washing cups and beakers
  • Emptying left over hot water from the urn
  • Putting away the tea, coffee, sugar, cups, beakers, teaspoons and the urn
  • Putting away extra chairs  Washing the tables
  • Hoovering the floor  Changing the binbag
  • Turning off the lights  Locking the door and returning the key

What skills do I need?

  • Tidy, organised and practical,
  • open-minded,
  • non-judgmental,
  • able to encourage and promote a safe, friendly environment,
  • willing to be involved in a group project, initiative and ability to volunteer unsupervised, while knowing when and how to ask for advice.
