Migration has always been part of human history and present, as people have moved around to find safety or to seek a decent life for themselves & their families. The north east has a rich cultural history, sitting on major ports with international links. Many different nationalities passed through or remained here, leaving legacies which have become part of north east culture today.

The Conversation Group was started from a desire to practise mutual aid and offer practical support alongside people new to the North East, and people new to the English language. 
The group offers a supportive & welcoming space to share information, practise English, make friends, and learn from each other, and strives for equal rights for all. The group holds a weekly meet up session, plus other activities throughout the year. There are also opportunities to volunteer behind the scenes throughout the week. 

Supporting people with college homework, individual language practice etc

Tasks include:

  • Supporting individuals with homework they have brought
  • Supporting with activities one to one, e.g reading practice.

What skills do I need?

  • Open-minded, non-judgmental, warm and welcoming, a good listener, patient,
  • excited to learn from others,
  • able to encourage participants to share what they have to say and what they’d like to learn,
  • willing to use a variety of methods to promote communication,
  • sensitive to the challenges members may face, committed to confidentiality,
  • committed to inclusion and equality,
  • able to encourage and promote a safe, friendly environment,
  • willing to be involved in a group project, initiative and ability to volunteer unsupervised, while knowing when and how to ask for advice.
