About the role

As a Trainee Adviser, you’ll be helping people from all walks of life access the support and information they need — from understanding their rights and accessing local services, to getting help with forms or signposting to specialist support.

You’ll receive full training and support to develop your confidence, skills and knowledge. This is a great opportunity if you’re looking to build experience in community work, advice, advocacy or public services.

Main tasks and responsibilities

  • Welcome and listen to people who need advice or support
  • Help gather relevant information to understand their needs
  • Provide basic guidance or signposting under supervision
  • Support clients with filling out forms or making referrals
  • Keep simple records of the advice given (training provided)
  • Attend training sessions and regular team check-ins
  • Work alongside staff and senior advisers to develop skills gradually

Benefits to Volunteer

  • Learn new skills – including communication, problem-solving, admin and client support
  • Build knowledge – about housing, benefits, local services, and more
  • Gain experience – ideal for anyone exploring careers in advice, social work, public services or community work
  • Boost your confidence – through real-world interaction and structured support
  • Make a difference – helping individuals who may feel lost, overwhelmed or unheard
  • Join a team – be part of a supportive, values-driven organisation
