The Research and Campaigns role focuses on turning client stories into evidence that highlights local issues and supports campaigning for change. Volunteers work with staff and other volunteers to:

  • identify and monitor trends in the problems clients experience
  • gather evidence and collect data
  • raise awareness of local issues within the service, and support colleagues to share evidence

Tasks include:

  • developing resources such as presentations, reports and social media posts
  • helping organise campaigns, contributing to meetings, contacting MPs and Councillors, writing letters to agencies and government departments and supporting policy research
  • volunteers also stay up to date with national Citizens Advice campaigns and may help with general tasks that support the team.

This role benefits volunteers by giving them the chance to:
  • make a real difference to people’s lives
  • gain new skills and knowledge
  • build experience for employment
  • use existing skills in a meaningful way
  • improve confidence and wellbeing
  • meet new people
  • feel part of a supportive team
  • it also helps volunteers get to know their local community and give something back

What skills do I need?

Volunteers should be:

  • friendly, approachable and patient, non‑judgmental, and respectful of different views and cultures
  • good verbal and written communication skills are important, along with confidence in English and being comfortable using digital technology
  • volunteers need to be willing to learn about and follow Citizens Advice aims, principles, confidentiality and data protection
  • no prior experience or qualifications are required, and full training is provided

The role can be done from home, a local office or an outreach location, so access to a computer and internet is helpful for remote work. There is no requirement for a driving licence, vehicle or insurance.
