About

Located in the historical City Hall Bradford the Bradford Police Museum provides a unique insight into the history and heritage of policing, criminal justice, civic enforcement and the development of crime and punishment in Bradford from the early 19th century onwards. The museum situated on the site of the original 19th century police station in City Hall and which was operational between 1874 and 1974 brings together exhibits, documents and memorabilia relating to the history of policing from the inception of the Bradford Borough Police force in the mid-19th century to the present day. The collection includes Victorian police truncheons, uniforms and a unique photographic archive covering 150 years of policing in the city. Visits to the museum include guided tours of the original Victorian cells which formed part of the original police station together with a visit to the beautifully preserved Victorian Court room. Volunteer with us! The museum is constantly looking to recruit motivated people as volunteers and offers a wide range of volunteering opportunities for individuals with an interest in history who want to make a difference and contribute to the heritage of the city. All volunteers receive training in their chosen roles. The museum needs volunteers to help during our regular public opening times as well as helping out with private pre-arranged guided museum tours, the legendary ghost tours and our expanding schools’ visits. Front of House Greeting visitors, working on the reception desk and selling merchandise from our shop to visitors are key roles ensuring our visitors get the best from their time in the museum. If you have a pleasant customer focus and are willing to operate the till with cash or card payments this could be the role for you. Tour Guides Visitors are treated to the museum’s highly rated guided tour of the museum’s Victorian cells and courtroom. The museum’s tour guides accompany groups of up to 6 visitors and explain the history and context of the cells and courtroom bringing the past events to life. Curatorial Team The Curatorial Team is fully hands-on, responsible for cataloguing, caring and conserving our extensive collection. The museum uses industry standard software to catalogue artefacts. Training is provided. A number of former team members have successfully used their experiences to gain employment in the museum and heritage sector. Historic Vehicle Fleet Due to lack of storage space most of our collection is stored off-site and is driven to events. The fleet is undergoing a refurbishment programme as and when funds are available. To help with this the museum is looking for people with a knowledge of maintaining and driving classic cars and older motorbikes.
