Purpose of the Role:

As a Trustee of the Bradford Police Museum, you will play a key role in shaping the strategic direction of the museum, ensuring its sustainability and legal compliance, and supporting its charitable aims. Board members are integral in overseeing the museum’s operations and helping it thrive as a respected heritage and cultural institution.

Training & Support: • All new Board Members will receive an induction and be provided with the necessary training to understand the museum’s governance structure, strategic goals, and operations. Ongoing support is provided to ensure Board Members are equipped to fulfil their responsibilities.

Additional Information: • Board Members are covered by public liability insurance while on duty. • The museum’s volunteer Board Member’s play a key role in ensuring its future, working collaboratively with a team of dedicated volunteers and one part-time employee.

About The Bradford Police Museum: The Bradford Police Museum is an independent museum and registered charity, governed by a board of trustees and run by a team of passionate volunteers. We hold Arts Council England accreditation and were praised by The Times in 2023. Highly rated on TripAdvisor, the museum continues to expand its offer as we prepare for the City of Culture 2025.

Located in the heart of Bradford, the museum offers visitors guided tours of the beautifully preserved Victorian police cells and courtroom, alongside a gallery displaying items from our extensive collection. We are the only police museum in West Yorkshire and one of the few in the country to feature a fleet of historic police vehicles.

Our curatorial team works year-round to preserve and maintain our growing collection, ensuring the history and heritage of policing in Bradford is protected and shared with future generations.

What skills do I need?

Key Responsibilities:

• Contribute to setting the strategic direction of the museum and overseeing its operating performance. • Ensure compliance with national and local museum standards, policies, and legal requirements. • Support fundraising efforts and initiatives, including bid writing and building relationships with external partners. • Provide governance and guidance to ensure the museum operates sustainably and in accordance with its mission. • Work collaboratively with fellow trustees and museum staff to further the museum's goals and objectives. • Engage with the local community and stakeholders to enhance the museum's visibility and impact. • Take on specific tasks related to the museum’s development, drawing on your expertise and network.

Desired Skills & Experience

• Strong passion for heritage, the history of law & order, and the Bradford community. • Demonstrated interest in or experience with governance, strategic planning, and museum operations. • Ability to contribute ideas and expertise in specific areas such as marketing, social media, partnership building, or fundraising. • Strong networking abilities and a willingness to leverage contacts to help the museum grow and succeed. • A collaborative, proactive approach to working as part of a team. • Commitment to supporting the museum’s mission and ensuring its long-term sustainability. • Experience in museum management, collections, learning, or outreach. • Proven experience in the voluntary sector or nonprofit governance. • Familiarity with local heritage and cultural initiatives, particularly those focused on criminal justice and civic enforcement.
